The Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents that youth ATV operation has strict legal requirements. Recent complaints from towns like Jeffers, Storden, and Bingham Lake have prompted this renewed warning. It is illegal for any youth to operate an ATV on public roads without direct supervision by an adult with a valid driver’s license.

Here are some key rules by age:

  • Under 10: Only on private property with permission.
  • Ages 10–11: May ride small ATVs on public lands or frozen lakes with a parent or guardian.
  • Ages 12–15: Must have ATV Safety Certification and adult supervision to ride on public lands or cross roads.
  • Ages 16–17: Need a driver’s license and safety certification to operate near roads.

Also, youth riders may only carry a passenger if it’s their parent or legal guardian. And remember – anyone under 15 may not operate a side-by-side Class 2 ATV. ATV Safety Certification is required for ages 12–16 and for any rider born after July 1, 1987. Training includes an online course and hands-on class, available through the Minnesota DNR at www.dnr.state.mn.us  Deputies will continue educating riders and parents, but repeat violations could lead to citations. If you have further questions, you can call the Sheriff’s Office at 507-831-1375.  Ride safe, ride smart, and help keep our communities safe.

Fulda City Council held a work session on June 23rd and city officials are taking a closer look at how to fund a major infrastructure overhaul. During the work session, engineer Jordan Odegard with Bollig Engineering outlined current and future projects that could total more than 65 million dollars. That figure doesn’t include upgrades to the water tower, treatment plant, or wastewater ponds. Odegard, along with colleagues Brian Bollig and Laura Ostlie, discussed potential funding strategies with the council, specifically recommending the city pursue financing through the Public Facilities Authority, or PFA, rather than Rural Development. While PFA offers a lower interest rate, it would delay the start of construction until 2027. The delay would give the city time to shift the CSAH 2 project and secure more favorable terms. If the city moves forward with PFA funding, a public hearing will be required. City Clerk Janel Burchill is working with the engineering team to set that date. Meanwhile, Bollig Engineering will also coordinate with the street department on installing smart manhole covers as part of the improvements. The council is expected to further review and confirm the details of the session at their next regular meeting on July 7th.
