Mt Lake Police Department released the following Press Release late afternoon yesterday. On March 30th at 3pm, a Mt. Lake Officer investigated information about a suspect possessing a stolen handgun. The suspect worked at a Mt Lake Business and was believed to be there. The gun was also believed to be located in the suspect’s vehicle. The handgun was stolen out of Jackson County last year. The officer arrived at the business and located the suspect, who was sitting in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. He had a blanket around his lap and was very lethargic in his movements and responding to questions. There was a strong odor of burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle and a vape was on the person’s lap. The suspect confirmed there was a firearm in the vehicle, specifically a shotgun in the trunk, but denied possessing a handgun. The officer directed the suspect to exit the vehicle, which he rolled up the window and bent forward to begin reaching and around the floorboard of the car. He was commanded to stop reaching as the officer opened the door. Once the door was opened, an empty handgun holster was seen on the floorboard. Believing the driver was reaching or had retrieved a handgun, the officer grabbed the suspect out of the vehicle and handcuffed him. He was searched, but no handgun was located. The suspect admitted the handgun was located under the driver’s seat. The vehicle was searched and a loaded Taurus Handgun was located, which was confirmed as being the stolen handgun from Jackson County. Also, numerous other marijuana paraphernalia was located inside the vehicle. The suspect, CODY MICHAEL PITTS, a 29 year old male of Comfrey, was placed under arrested and booked into Cottonwood County Jail with pending charges of Possession of Stolen Firearm (receiving stolen property), Felon in Possession of Firearm/Ammo, and Open Bottle, with pending test results for DUI.

Federated REA released the following information concerning the ice storm outages on Sunday the 30th. About 573 Federated Rural Electric members in Jackson County lost power at 138pm on Sunday. The co-op members affected were served by the Wilder substation. Power was restored around 3pm. ITC’s transmission line north of Lakefield brings power to the Wilder substation. Federated line crews worked to troubleshoot the problem with the transmission line. This time the transmission lines were “galloping” due to the ice buildup and wind slapping the lines together.  According to Operations Manager George Madden this is the second Wilder substation outage this month due to ITC transmission lines. Madden went onto say they have spoken with the local and regional ITC managers; and were told, they plan to do some upgrades to this section of line yet this year. Madden appreciates Federated members for their patience. Other outages occurred due to the ice and wind on Sunday in the areas of Okabena and Heron Lake. Line crews worked about nine hours Sunday to restore power throughout Jackson and Martin County.
