The City of Jeffers was awarded grant funds through the Minnesota DNR’s Shade Tree Program to conduct the City’s Shade Tree Project. The primary focus of this project is removal of ash trees from public park property within the City of Jeffers, followed by planting replacement trees to maintain & improve tree canopy cover. Proactively removing ash trees is important as emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis) threatens the future of ash trees across Minnesota. Emerald ash borer, known as EAB, bores into ash trees and cuts off food and water supply, ultimately killing the trees. These dead trees can become safety hazards, and the safety of the City’s residents is a top priority. Physical labor for the project, including removal of ash trees, site preparation for planting of new trees, and the planting of new trees, will be contracted out to a qualified contractor and covered by the grant. A variety of replacement trees will be planted, and are anticipated to consist of elm, birch, and aspen, to boost diversity in the tree canopy within the City of Jeffers. The project will result in enhanced public spaces which may be utilized by all residents for recreation & outdoor gatherings, providing an opportunity for residents to connect with nature while creating a resilient, sustainable community for current and future generations. The City will host an educational workshop to train residents on proper tree care and invite them to “Adopt-a-Tree.” These dedicated residents will assist the City in maintaining these newly planted trees to ensure their longevity and help build a stronger community. Information on the workshop will be provided at a later date. Total grant funds awarded for the project is $81,180. Funding is provided on a reimbursement basis. This project is being conducted in cooperation with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources

It’s been a crazy summer. Actually lets go one step further and say it has been a crazy YEAR!!! Can you believe that we are closer to the end of 2024 then we are the beginning? What this year has actually done is bring some incredible people out of their spaces and extend a helping hand in so many different ways. KDOM wants to recognize people in action. People that make a difference. It can be anything from assisting someone with their groceries, or maybe stopping to help pick up something that was scattered by accident, or maybe it is a neighbor that just always seems to lend an ear or a hand when needed. The obvious is anyone that you feel needs recognition in the height and recovery of recent flood disaster. Maybe it is an individual or maybe it is a group. It doesn’t matter whoever you think is an Hometown Hero from anywhere will qualify for our new program. If you have someone you’d like to send a shoutout to let us know. We will be featuring our “Hometown Heroes” every day of the week on all our stations. Businesses can sponsor employees or customers or other businesses. Individuals can sponsor businesses, neighbors or friends or even a stranger. It is endless. Now is not the time to lose that volunteerism vibe. The Windom Chamber of Commerce and the MN Department of Corrections will once again be sponsoring and coordinating the Night to Unite event on Tuesday August 6th from 5-7pm in the downtown square. This year they are planning on celebrating Volunteerism in our Community. They want to thank all the volunteers that have come together for the flood crisis and want to encourage the volunteering to continue. With the theme of Volunteerism, any volunteer organization that would like to set up is more than welcome. Please contact the Windom Chamber Office by stopping by at 303 9th Street in Windom or calling 507-831-2752. The Public is invited out for a fun night on the square with a vehicle fair on 4th Ave for kids and adults to enjoy, music and a community cook-out provided by HyVee and an ice-cream social. Come to the square and enjoy a night of unification and see how you can get involved and enjoy being apart of something greater. Night to Unite is Tuesday August 6th.
