Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office reported 62 calls in the week of May 26th to June 1st. Deputies conducted 4 Civil Processes, had 3 Motorist Assists, worked 2 Suspicious Activities and 1 Suspicious Person and Vehicle Call, Served 4 warrants and conducted 18 Traffic Stops. Windom Police Department reported Terroristic Threat of Violence on May 30th at approximately 3:36 pm. According to the report in the City of Windom, a 16-year-old juvenile threatened with intent to terrorize multiple family members and another juvenile. After review by the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charges were brought for Threats of Violence, a Felony, on the 16-year-old Windom Juvenile male. On the 31st at 1:07am an Officer was on patrol on Highway 60 near the Cottonwood Vet Clinic when he observed a vehicle traveling towards him that he knew the driver’s license status in Minnesota is revoked. After initiating a traffic stop and investigation, a citation was issued to a 31-year-old Windom Male for Driving After Revocation. A two-vehicle non injury accident was reported at the intersection of 10th Street and Highway 60 on June 1st at 1:32 pm.

Windom’s Riverfest officially kicked off last night with a fantastic turnout at the Community Barbeque on the Square. What a wonderful sight to see and be a part of. Community gatherings are an important part of small-town life and the Hats off to Windom Chamber of Commerce along with HyVee for a great evening of community bonding. The Miss Riverfest Pageant at the BARC was once again a fun tradition to witness.

Miss Congeniality:  Harriet Lohse and

Miss Photogenic:  Neveah Sosa.

In the Little Miss Drawing, Brooklynne Meyeraan was selected.

A $500 Scholarship was presented to last year (2023) Miss Riverfest, Aubrianna Spielman and a $300 Scholarship was presented to (2023) Runner-Up Porscha Myrvold. Congratulations to all the young ladies, each of you have such potential to change the world starting with your community.

  • Murray County Board of Commissioners at 8:30am in the Murray County Government Center.
  • Jackson County Board of Commissioners and the Drainage Authority at 9am at the Jackson County Court House Commissioners Board Room
  • The Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners at 9:00am at the Cottonwood County Courthouse in the Commissioners Room.
  • Windom Area Health’s Foundation Board at 5pm in the Large Conference Room at the Hospital
  • The St James City Council at 5:30pm in James City Hall – Council Chambers. Meetings can be viewed live or anytime on the City of St James’s YouTube Channel.
  • The Windom City Council is meeting at 6:30 pm at the Windom Community Center located at 1750 Cottonwood Lake Drive in Windom, following the Minnesota Department of Transportation Open House for the Hwy 60 Windom project from 4-6pm at the Windom Community Center. There will be time for public comments on the proposed MnDot Highway 60 project at the beginning of the meeting and the public is encouraged to come participate and speak up on their thoughts.

The Windom Area Health Foundation announced their continuing education scholarship winners. This years winners were:

  • $2,500 to Kendyl Sammons and Tristyn Maras both of Windom
  • $1,000 to Emily Schmiesing of Walnut Grove
  • Mildred Klosterbuer Memorial Scholarship for $1,000 went to Hailey Veenker of Windom
  • Ron Meyer Memorial Scholarship for $1,000 went to Else Paplow of Lakefield

To be eligible for the scholarships, students must be high school seniors or college students planning to pursue a healthcare related field and reside in Cottonwood County or its adjacent surrounding counties. Scholarships were awarded based on the student’s strong academic excellence, leadership, integrity, community service, and commitment to following a course of study relevant to healthcare. Applications were reviewed by the Scholarship Committee of the Windom Area Health Foundation. Scholarships are made possible by generous community donations and individual donors, some who give in memory of a loved one.
