Happy May Day!!! It’s a HAPPY DAY no matter how you look at it. It’s the next official day that marks the start of Spring AND it creates such joy watching the smiling faces and the hearing the pure laughter coming from children and some adults as they partake in the fun traditions from surprise flower baskets to the maypole!! Every 1st of May makes my heart smile as I whisk myself back to 1995. My boys and I had finished up our May baskets and talked all about how again we run up, ring or knock on the door and RUN!!! We run because #1 May Baskets are a mysterious joy that we give to our friends and people we want to bring happiness too.. #2 you RUN as fast as you can because IF the person you are leaving a May Basket for sees you and CATCHES you they get to KISS YOU!!! Teachers, Elders in the Community, Friends both boy and girl we were all over town… Screaming with laughter as the chases were taking place with hugs from teachers, slugs from the boys and kisses/hugs from the elders. THERE was ONE LEFT… According to Nate it was saving the best for last… Stacy Mark… Drew ran up and dropped his… Nate MOSEYED… I mean there was no hurry in his whole being… There he stood on the front door step, rang the bell AGAIN and out popped Stacy from the BACK… THE CHASE WAS ON… Drew dodged left, he went right, he ran and jumped over boulders to get away and Nate was kinda just moving in slow motion.. Stacy noticed Nate within her reach… BOOM she caught him and put a big ol’ slobbery kiss on his cheek… NATE SMILED, Drew said ooooo she got you!!! We all laughed. When we got in the car, I asked Nate if he wasn’t feeling well because he wasn’t moving as fast as he had been… Naters looked straight at me smiled and said… Aaaahhhh Stacy… she fell straight into my trap… GETTING CAUGHT… WORTH IT!!!! You know the story… a five year old boy in love with the cute little red head girl. Best friends that he swore he would marry someday. Time. Moves. And Life moved them in separate directions and God led them to their meant to be spouses and families BUT young love and friendship is unbreakable!!! So get out take that chance and deliver the basket and get caught or not.. Just don’t ever deny the joy of May Day!!!! Oh and did you know because I JUST LEARNED this ON May 1st, you are supposed to wash your face with the Morning Dew for good luck… THAT would have been a good thing to know 56 years ago…

Bear hunt applications due Friday, May 3

Prospective bear hunters have until Friday, May 3 to apply for a bear hunting license from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Applications for the 2024 season can be submitted online, at any license agent or by telephone at 888-665-4236.

A total of 4,030 licenses are available in 15 quota areas where licenses are limited for the 2024 season, which opens Sunday, Sept. 1, and closes Sunday, Oct. 13. Licenses are awarded to applicants via a lottery, and lottery winners will be notified by Saturday, June 1. The deadline to purchase bear hunting licenses awarded by lottery is Thursday, Aug. 1. Any remaining unpurchased licenses will be available over the counter starting at noon on Tuesday, Aug. 6.

An unlimited number of bear licenses also will be sold over the counter for the no-quota area that includes east-central and far northwestern Minnesota. No-quota licenses are valid only in the no-quota area.

Hunters with either a quota or no-quota license who are interested in taking a problem bear should contact the DNR wildlife manager (mndnr.gov/areas/wildlife) for their area(s) of interest to be added to the hunter contact list for any opportunities that might arise.

Complete instructions about how to apply for a bear hunting license, maps of permit areas and a listing of permit availability for each area are available on the Minnesota DNR website (mndnr.gov/hunting/bear).
