Grant money is available to a limited number Minnesota farmers to build winter greenhouses for growing fresh produce.

The opportunity, supported by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s AGREETT program, is available through University of Minnesota Extension’s Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships (RSDP). RSDP seeks one specialty crop farmer in each of its five regions to partner on passive solar greenhouse research and education. Similar structures – called deep winter greenhouses – have been built in the program since 2016. To date, farmers have been able to profitably grow a variety of salad greens that are sold to direct market consumers.

RSDP will provide $25,000 of the expected $48,000 to $58,000 cost to build a prototype greenhouse. In return, participants agree to share access to their structure for research projects, public workshops, and demonstrations for three years. Proposals are due February 14, 2024.

For more information on deep winter greenhouses and the request for applications, visit www.z.umn.edu/deepwintergreenhouse   A full description of the program is available at windomradio.com under Local Headline News. The University of Minnesota Extension is an equal opportunity educator and employer.

I know it is only Thursday BUT… I am moving my 90-year old mother from an Independent Living Apartment to an Assisted Living Apartment. I want to first state that this is in Nebraska. What I have learned in the past week. Even though we have downsized her twice she STILL has A LOT of treasures, mostly things she does not even remember she treasures. Moving is tough. I find myself between how do I put it, a rock and a hard place? I want her to be free to do as she wishes but I don’t want her to get hurt. Physically, Mentally, or Emotionally. As I work along side my brother, I am grateful for the opportunity to serve this woman that lived a military life of when it was time to transfer she did so, she raised 5 children. I’ve told you before I am the baby of that five. She has witnessed a lot in her 90 years. She has laid to rest my Dad, My Oldest Brother and My Sister. We are so fortunate for my brother and his wife to live in town and take care of her needs. She has a LOT of needs I found out this past week… I have got to start being nicer to my kids… I am only 40 years away from THEM having to haul out the Grandfather Clock… AGAIN…
