A Windom Senior High School teacher was recently surprised with a grant for $1, 250. Kristine Evans, a new Learning Disability teacher at Windom High School was awarded the grant through the Western Governors University’s “Fund My Classroom” initiative which honored teachers during teacher Appreciation week May 8th – 12th. 

Evans learned she was selected for the grant when she received a $1, 250 check at Windom Senior High School on May 15th. Evans will use the funds to add flexible seating to her new classroom which will provide the opportunity for her students to choose seating arrangements that best suit their comfort and learning needs.


Windom’s Riverfest is this weekend, June 9th through the 11th. Monday night, during the Windom Women of Today Miss Riverfest Pageant, Aubriana Spielman was crowned Miss Riverfest, Porscha Myrvold was Miss Riverfest Runner-Up, Most Photogenic was Ella Smith, Miss Congeniality was Hailey Veenker, and Magdalene Lizards was crowned Little Miss RiverfestRiverfest events continue Friday night with food and beverage venders starting at 6pm, the Jeremy DeWall Band at 7pm, and HAIRBALL at 9pm. An entire day of activities continues Saturday including the cribbage tournament, men’s softball tournament, craft & vender fair, bouncy houses, parade, and fireworks. Sunday is the last day of Riverfest beginning with a DJ and food venders, community worship service, petting zoo and pony rides, and a Pirates baseball game. During the Jackson County Board meeting on May 16th, the board approved the low quote of $15,688.38 from Landon Burmeister to replace a collapsed sewer line at the County Fairgrounds. Jackson commissioners also adopted board action 23-087 to recognize June 19th, 2023 as a paid holiday for Jackson County employees and to close the County offices in observation of Juneteenth, and adopted board action 23-086 to approve a retailer’s license for sale of tobacco contingent upon receiving liability insurance for United Fuels Midwest DBA Speedway of Jackson and United Fuels Midwest DBA Vet’s Whoa and Go effective June 1st 2023 to December 31st, 2023.   


The City of Mountain Lake had their City Council meeting on Monday, June 5th. During the meeting, a motion was approved for the street department to purchase a new lawn mower for next year. A third and final reading was approved for the ordinance change regarding city park hours. Parks will now be open from 5am to 11pm. Also approved was the hiring of an Assistant Police Chief and to purchase a City of Windom K9 vehicle and dog Bruno 


Jackson County Sheriff’s office reported on June 4th at approximately 1:40am a deputy responded to a report of 10-20 cattle out in Belmont Township. At 2:09 am Deputies responded to a report of a group of people laying in the roadway on a street in Jackson.  Deputies located the group, all of whom were adults who were intoxicated, who said they were just walking home. At 3:38am deputies responded to loud music coming from a residence in Jackson and at 8:17am a deputy located a sink hole on County Road 14 west of Lakefield. The County Public Works were notified and responded to the scene. An empty 9mm magazine for a pistol was found on a sidewalk in Jackson, a passport and cash found in Okabena was turned in and returned. Deputies responded to a child custody dispute in Heron Lake at approximately 7:15pm and at 7:37pm a deputy responded to a report of harassing Face Book messages in Jackson. 


On June 5th 2023 at 12:22pm a theft was reported to the Windom Police Department of a 2015 Chevy Malibu. Sometime between June 3rd at 10:20pm and June 4th, someone entered the parked, unlocked vehicle in the driveway. No damage was caused to the vehicle, but first generation AirPods, white basketball shoes with a blue logo and $25 in cash were taken.
