The monthly weather statistics have been reported for the city of Windom in May.  The information is compiled by a local weather observer and reported to the National Weather Service Office in Sioux Falls.  May was a wetter and warmer month that 2021.  The high temperature was 96 degrees on the 13th with three days though out the month of 90 degrees or more.  The low temperature for the month was 35 degrees on May 4th.  In 2021 the high temperature was 92 with a low for the month of 32 degrees.  5.18 inches of precipitation was recorded which is just over 2 inches more for the month than last year and the yearly total is just over two inches more that was recorded in 2021.

Windom Police reported a Stop Arm School Bus Stop Arm Violation on May 31st at approximately 7:30am. An officer observed a school bus stop arm violation incident in the 2300 block of River Road. A 50-year-old Heron Lake man faces a possible gross misdemeanor School Bus Arm Violation in the matter pending review of the County Attorney’s office.  Later in the evening Windom Police received a report of a Hit and Run in the parking lot of HyLife Foods. The owner of a parked 2011 Kia Soul received damage on the passenger front door and rear passenger door, while working her shift at HyLife Foods.

The Windom Women of Today reported a fantastic turnout for their Red Cross Blood Drive on May 24th. They exceeded their goal by 11 donors with 77 people donating. According to Monica Muller, Blood Drive Coordinator the Windom Women of Today are elated with surpassing their goals the last two drives and have been building new donors. The Windom Women of Today will host their next blood drive on Wednesday July 27th. You can make appointments by going online at redcrossblood.org or by calling 1-800-733-2767. Muller went on to emphasize that one unity of blood can save THREE lives. With this drive alone with the 77 units collected 231 lives can be saved. Be a hero and donate.

USDA Rural Development has funding available for very low- and low-income individuals and families seeking to purchase or repair a home in a rural area.

The Direct Home Loan program offers financing to qualified very-low and low-income applicants that are unable to qualify for traditional financing. No down payment is required, and the interest rate could be as low as one percent with a subsidy. Applicants must meet income and credit guidelines and demonstrate repayment ability. The program is available in rural communities of generally 35,000 people or less. The maximum loan amount is $40,000 at a one percent interest rate, repayable for a 20-year term and can be used to improve or modernize homes and do essential repairs. Grants of up to $10,000 are available to homeowners 62 and older and must be used to remove health or safety hazards, such as fixing a leaking roof, installing indoor plumbing, or replacing a furnace.
