Windom Area Health announced that they negotiated a new 10-year contract with Sanford Health Network to remain a managed hospital under Sanford Health Network. According to Chief Executive Officer Shelby Medina, Windom Area Health is an independent, City owned critical access hospital that is ultimately overseen by a Governing Board of Directors appointed by the Mayor of Windom. The Governing Board of Directors assumes the responsibilities of ultimate control over the operations, medical, professional and ethical affairs of the hospital. On Monday, January 24th’s Governing Board meeting, the Governing Board of Directors unanimously voted to extend the hospital partnership agreement with Sanford Health for an additional 10 years.

Sanford Health has been a partner of Windom Area Health dating back 30+ years. This partnership has proven to be a win/win for all parties involved. Sanford Health, in collaboration with Windom Area Health’s Governing Board of Directors, employs the Chief Executive Officer whose responsibilities are to oversee the day-to-day operations of the hospital, develop and implement strategic goals that align with community healthcare needs and secures financial viability, and to ensure the hospital remains compliant with all Federal, State, and local regulations.

Medina went onto say, As a managed partner, Sanford provides Windom Area Health with the ability to take advantage of discounts that Sanford has negotiated with third party vendors; such as: supply chain (medical equipment and supplies); food distribution; clinical support (radiologists, specialists, lab directorship, regulatory compliance); and most significantly our electronic medical record. Sanford also provides a variety of outreach clinics that offer care to our community close to home.

Additional benefits of being a managed partner is Windom Area Health retains all net operating income and losses. There is no revenue sharing between the two systems and because of this Windom Area Health is able to remain independent and enter into partnerships with other organizations for services that Sanford is unable to provide. This is extremely beneficial because it allows Windom Area Health to be good partners with all medical providers and offers our community with the option of choice.

Medina added, The hospital’s Governing Board of Directors spent the past year assessing its partnership with Sanford. Entering into such long-term agreements is not something that is taken lightly. Sanford has been a dedicated and committed partner of the hospital and the community. Sanford’s business ethics, expectations of high quality care, and commitment to the communities it serves were key factors in Windom Area Health’s decision to retain our partnership for an additional 10 years.
