The Windom Area School Board held a  Special Board Meeting Tuesday.The Board accepted the resignation of current Superintendent Wayne Wormstadt and hired the Minnesota School Board Association to aide in working through the hiring process for a new Superintendent.

The Windom City Council approved on the recommendation of the City Street Commission to name Jon Ketzenberg of Windom the new Street Superintendent, at the Windom City Council Meeting on the 18th.  Ketzenberg had been serving as the interim since Brian Cooley resigned earlier this month due to health issues.

The Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners met on Tuesday. Representative Rod Hamilton met with the Board to discuss upcoming legislature issues including a supplemental budget portion to address the state’s six billion budget surplus, redistricting, mental health needs, and water treatment facilities will be high on his list of priorities for the bonding bill. Hamilton stated that he believes resources for front-line workers and teachers will be proposed as well as proposals to discontinuing taxes on social security benefits.

The Board approved posting and hiring of several full time staff positions and internal position movements and accepted resignations of Todd Dibble’s as of April 29,2022 and Lonn Englar, Heavy Equipment Operator effective as of February 4th, 2022.

The Mountain Lake Chamber of Commerce met on Tuesday and changed the Vendor Policy for POW WOW to reflect that all truck/food vendors will have the opportunity to purchase space during the POW WOW event as long as they have the right certifications and room is available. POW WOW will be June 17th through the 21st .

The Chamber will also once again be sponsoring “I LOVE MOUNTAIN LAKE” Coloring Contest for Valentines Day. Contest is for children in three age categories 2-5, 6-9 and 10-12. The winner for each category will win $10 in Chamber Bucks plus a coloring book and crayons. Adults are invited to participate by visiting participating businesses to pick up a coloring sheet and return to sponsoring businesses for a chance to win a special prize. Two Adult winners will be selected. All finished coloring pages must be turned into participating businesses by February 14th.

The Chamber is resurrecting the Booze Barrow Raffle. Tickets will be sold for $5 each and winner will be selected at The Den on St Patrick’s Day Thursday March 17th at 7pm. More details to follow.

USDA Rural Development has funding available for very low- and low-income individuals and families seeking to purchase or repair a home in a rural area.

The Direct Home Loan program offers financing to qualified very-low and low-income applicants that are unable to qualify for traditional financing. No down payment is required, and the interest rate could be as low as one percent with a subsidy. Applicants must meet income and credit guidelines and demonstrate repayment ability. The program is available in rural communities of generally 35,000 people or less.

The maximum loan amount is $20,000 at a one percent interest rate, repayable for a 20-year term and can be used to improve or modernize homes and do essential repairs. Grants of up to $7,500 are available to homeowners 62 and older and must be used to remove health or safety hazards, such as fixing a leaking roof, installing indoor plumbing, or replacing a furnace.
