Mountain Lake Police Department had 26 calls in the week of August 3rd to August 9th. Police handled several driving complaints and traffic stops during the week, including two speeding citations and several verbal warnings. A 24-year-old Windom woman was arrested for trespassing and a DANCO violation following a complaint on August 3rd. Officers also investigated several reports involving phone scams, including scams targeting veterans. No financial losses were reported in those incidents. Other calls included a theft investigation, a complaint about a dog at large, an ambulance assist, and several follow-ups on previous cases. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office handled 31 calls from August 3rd through August 9th. Some of the more notable calls included several assault investigations, including one at Fish Lake that resulted in a 76-year-old rural Windom man being arrested for second-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal damage to property. Deputies also made arrests in connection with two assaults in Lakefield, a DUI arrest involving an 18-year-old Lakefield man, and a search warrant that resulted in the arrest of a 32-year-old Jackson man for possession of weapons as an ineligible person. Other calls included domestic disturbances, theft and fraud complaints, traffic complaints, medical assists, and a gas line emergency in Jackson. Windom Area Schools are making final preparations for the 2026-2027 school year. Principals provided back-to-school updates during Monday night’s Windom Area School Board meeting. Elementary Principal reports the elementary and preschool buildings are looking great, with custodial and maintenance staff cleaning, repairing and painting areas throughout the buildings. Welcome letters have also been sent to elementary families. New teachers will attend in-service training August 20th, with all staff returning August 25th. Preschool screenings are scheduled for August 27th, followed by elementary and preschool entrance conferences September 1st and 2nd. Those dates will also be picture days. The Elementary PTO is providing sibling care for K-through-4th-grade students during the conferences. At the Middle and High School, Principal Dane Nielsen reported the MSHS office will return to regular hours Tuesday, August 11th, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Staff are working on schedules, enrollment, staffing and other preparations for the new school year. New student orientation will be held August 20th, with grades 5-through-12 orientation night scheduled for August 26th. The first day of school for grades 5 through 12 is September 1st. In a report High School Principal Bryan Joyce reported projected high school enrollment of 357 students for the coming school year which would be the highest high school enrollment in Windom since the 2003-2004 school year. Joyce also reported fall activities begin August 17th, and the district continues to look for qualified paraprofessionals to work with students. The principals said they are looking forward to welcoming students and families back for another successful school year.

The City of St James announced that Seal coating is scheduled to begin Monday, August 17th. No parking signs will be posted Friday the 14th in the affected areas. Please watch for signs and make sure all vehicles are moved before work begins on Monday. Vehicles that are not moved will be towed.
