The St. James City Council has taken the first step toward adding the Pledge of Allegiance to its regular council meetings. According to a notice issued by the City of St. James, council members conducted the first reading of a proposed ordinance amendment during their meeting on Tuesday, June 16. The amendment would revise Section 30.04(B) of the St. James City Code, which outlines council procedures for regular meetings. If approved, the ordinance would formally add the Pledge of Allegiance to the agenda of regular City Council meetings. Under Minnesota law, cities must provide a 10-day public notice before adopting new ordinances or amendments to existing ordinances. The notice allows residents an opportunity to review the proposal before final action is taken. City officials say the full text of the proposed ordinance is available for public inspection at the City Clerk/Treasurer’s office and will also be posted on the City of St. James website following the first reading. The proposal is expected to return to the St. James City Council for a second reading and possible adoption at a future meeting. If adopted, the amendment would become part of the city’s official code governing council meeting procedures.
