Volunteers spent part of Saturday helping get Kilen Woods State Park ready for summer. On May 2, 14 volunteers from Federated Rural Electric joined park staff to clean up trails, campgrounds and picnic areas. They picked up litter and branches, raked leaves, spread gravel and helped tidy the volleyball court. Park ranger Jason Honkomp said the extra help comes at a good time, with camping season opening this weekend. The group donated about 48 hours of work. The GreenTouch partnership between Federated and Kilen Woods has been going for 25 years. During that time, 444 volunteers have donated about 1,427 hours helping care for the park.

It’s that time of year again when Moms who live in Minnesota are invited to join a free virtual fishing challenge during Take a Mom Fishing Weekend Saturday, May 9th, through Sunday, May 10th, when Minnesota moms can fish without purchasing a fishing license.
To participate in the challenge, moms simply need to join the 2026 Minnesota Moms Fishing Challenge Facebook group and submit one photo of each fish they catch on May 9-10. All participants who submit a fish will be entered in a random drawing for prizes provided by the Student Angler Organization and their partners. This is the fourth year the DNR and its partners are hosting the Minnesota Moms Fishing Challenge. During the 2025 challenge, more than 2,700 Minnesota moms from across the state participated, catching 1,600 fish.
“Our goal is to surpass 10,000 participants in the challenge’s first four years,” Hanson said. To see challenge details and join in the fun, visit the Take a Mom Fishing webpage. Take a Mom Fishing Weekend was established in Minnesota in 1988 to coincide with Mother’s Day. Fishing season dates and regulations are on the Minnesota DNR fishing webpage. More information about how and where to fish, fishing equipment, ways to catch different kinds of fish, and fishing ethics and stewardship is on the Minnesota DNR learn to fish webpage.
