The Jeffers City Council met on the 27th, with a mix of updates on community programs, equipment needs, and ongoing city projects. A key discussion centered on a visit from Cottonwood County representative Luke Ewald of Des Moines Valley Health and Human Services (DVHHS). Ewald outlined several opportunities available to the city, including assistance with developing active living plans, establishing community gardens and food shelves, improving park equipment, and pursuing grant funding. He noted that his role is to help communities like Jeffers access state resources and expand local programming. The council also received an update on the city’s water tower grant application being handled by Bolton & Menk. Results are expected in early September. On the maintenance side, Public Works reported that a new street sweeper is expected to arrive this week. In addition, the council approved replacing a city lawn mower. A quote from Westbrook Ag Power totaled $5,950 with trade-in, and council members unanimously agreed to move forward with the purchase. Mayor Brad Prins reported that patchwork repairs are needed on South Courthouse Avenue, and council members also discussed conditions on several side streets throughout the city. The council is also looking into property clean-up concerns. The city clerk will work with the city attorney on addressing nuisance properties and possibly updating local ordinances. The meeting concluded with approval of the city’s bills and financial report.

So I am looking up news and trying my best to concentrate on giving you what you want to hear…. BUT I just cannot get Monday and Tuesday off my mind. I want to give a shout out to Cottonwood Historical Society for bringing Dr Anita Talsma Gaul to give a presentation on the rise and fall of the KKK in Southwest Minnesota. IT WAS SO INTERESTING!!! It is incredible to me that there isn’t more historical documents out there! IF you have pictures or documents not only about this but anything, contact the Historical Society DON”T JUST THROW it AWAY!!! And then Tuesday night the Riverfest Committee presented B2wins at the BARC, let me tell you it was NOT DISAPPOINTING!!! These two put on a great show. I just was captured from start to finish. I am not going to lie, my Sweet Henry plays the Violin and I just saw him someday performing to this level! My Bucket of Sunshine James ALWAYS grabs the ukulele when Henry is performing and some of the facial expressions were IDENTICAL!!! My only regret is that they weren’t here to be apart of this experience! Two nights in a row, two totally different programs but worth being up past our 8:00 bedtime! How fortunate are we that there are these kind of events being brought to this area. If you aren’t taking advantage of the fun and entertaining and informational programs that are offered through the Historical Society, Different Organizations, Businesses and Groups you are truly missing out! I am a better person for attending these events this week. For a moment in time I cut off the hectic helter skelter of the job, day and life and just enjoyed the community event! Check out our Community Calendar for upcoming events. I promise you won’t regret it!!!
