The Windom City Council met on Tuesday and the council discussed WindomNet and possible future ownership. City Administrator Steve Nasby told council members the city had initially reached out to five potential providers, ultimately receiving proposals from Midco, Southwest Minnesota Broadband Services (SMBS), and Federated Electric.

(“We did get three responses to the WindomNet acquisition request for proposals,” Nasby said. “Those were received from Midco, SMBS, which is Southwest Minnesota Broadband, and Federated Electric Fiber in Jackson.”)

Nasby noted a fourth company declined to move forward, while the other did not respond. Because the process involves private business data, details of the proposals are not yet being released publicly. However, council members emphasized that more transparency is coming soon. Councilman Jayesun Sherman addressed the limited information currently available, stressing that the delay is required—not intentional.

(“It’s never the city council’s desire to keep any secrets,” Sherman said. “Some things just have to wait for a certain time period… but it’s going to come out. So in just a couple weeks, you’ll know more.”)

A public meeting is scheduled for May 12 at the Windom Community Center, where each of the three companies will present to both the council and residents. Nasby said the session will begin at 4:30 p.m., with each provider given about 30 minutes. Councilman Scott Benson encouraged residents to attend and learn more about the proposals firsthand.

(“If you want to find out what’s going on with it, come up and listen—just like we have to,” Benson said.)

City leaders say the May 12 meeting will give the public its first in-depth look at the companies competing to take over WindomNet, as the council continues evaluating its next steps for the municipal broadband system.
