The Cottonwood County Historical Society will host a historical presentation on Monday evening April 27th at 7pm exploring a little-known chapter of the region’s past. Dr. Anita Talsma Gaul will present “The Not-So Invisible Nation: The KKK in Southwest Minnesota in the 1920s” at the museum located at 812 4th Avenue in Windom. Light refreshments will be served as this interesting program will examine the rise and fall of the Ku Klux Klan in southwest Minnesota during the 1920s. Klan activity in southwest Minnesota began around 1922, peaked in 1924, and had largely disappeared by 1927. During that time, the organization’s presence included cross burnings as well as rallies, parades, picnics, meetings and guest speakers. The presentation will explore what drew local residents to the organization, why it gained traction in the region, and what led to its relatively quick decline. Organizers say the topic remains an often overlooked part of local history that deserves closer examination. For more information about the program, contact the Cottonwood County Historical Society at 507-831-1134.
