Windom Police Department reported on the 23rd at approximately 4:49 pm an officer was dispatched to Iowa Premium Pork at 2850 Highway 60 for an ongoing assault. A security guard at the facility reported that there was an active assault at the security shed and dispatch advised their may be a weapon involved. After investigation, an arrest was made of a 40-year-old female from Windom for Domestic Assault, pending review by the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

Nationwide arrest warrants have been issued for a former Cottonwood County pastor and his wife in connection with a decades-old abuse case. Although under the rule of law, both are presumed innocent until proven guilty.  73-year-old Douglas Smallwood and 70-year-old Joyce Smallwood, are facing multiple charges stemming from incidents alleged to have occurred in the Mountain Lake area between 1997 and 1998. Douglas Smallwood faces eight felony counts of criminal sexual conduct involving minors. His wife, Joyce, is charged with felony child endangerment and child neglect. The investigation was reignited in late 2025 after new reports were made to law enforcement Investigators stated they conducted interviews and gathered statements before filing charges in March 2026. Though the couple now lives in Jamestown, Ohio, the warrants allow for their arrest anywhere in the country.

The Jeffers City Council met in regular session Monday night at City Hall. City Clerk Sharen Goeman announced the annual Board of Review will be held Wednesday, April 29th at 5:00 p.m. at City Hall. Council members also held discussion on several properties within the city. In other business, before closing out the meeting the council unanimously approved payment of bills and the financial report.

The Cottonwood County Historical Society is inviting the public to celebrate local student talent at the opening of the Cottonwood County Student Art Show. A reception will be held Sunday, March 29th from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Remick Gallery, with light refreshments served. Admission is free. The exhibit features more than 40 pieces of artwork created by senior high students from across Cottonwood County, including Mountain Lake, Mountain Lake Christian, Red Rock Central, Westbrook-Walnut Grove, and Windom Area Public Schools. A variety of mediums and themes will be on display, and visitors are encouraged to vote for their favorite piece. The show will run for four weeks, from March 29th through April 24th. The Cottonwood County Historical Society is located at 812 Fourth Avenue in Windom and is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with Saturday visits available by appointment.
