The Lakefield Police Department is launching a new program to encourage kids to wear helmets while riding bikes, scooters, skateboards, and rollerblades. The department recently received a $300 donation from the Jackson County Conservation League to support the “Wear Your Helmet” Citation Program. Instead of tickets, officers will hand out special helmet citations to kids seen wearing helmets. Those citations can be redeemed for a treat at Kiehl’s Bakery. Lakefield Police Chief Roger Pohlman says the goal is to encourage safe habits and build positive relationships between officers and young riders. The department plans to hand out up to 100 helmet citations between May and October.
