The Windom City Council approved an increase in retirement benefits for members of the Windom Fire Relief Association during its meeting on Tuesday. The council considered an action memo requesting authorization to raise the annual benefit from 33-hundred dollars to 4-thousand dollars per firefighter, per year of service. Fire Chief Ben Derickson told the council the request is based on strong investment performance by the Relief Association. He explained the pension fund is driven entirely by investment returns and is designed to support current members. Derickson noted the association reviews its investments at least quarterly and said the fund is more than able to support the increase without creating a shortfall. Council members discussed how the increase compares to other communities, but emphasized that Windom’s benefit level is determined by its own investment performance. It was also pointed out the increase would not require additional taxpayer dollars. According to information presented to the council, even with the proposed increase to 4-thousand dollars per year of service, the association remains fully funded. The last benefit adjustment was approved in 2024. Following discussion, the council unanimously approved the request to increase the annual benefit for retired firefighters.
