Today 9-11 marks the 24th Anniversary of the September 11th Terrorist attacks that killed 2,996 people in the United States. I can vividly remember where I was and what I was doing when I first heard of the attacks that took place in 2001 on this date. Members of the al-Qaida terrorist group hijacked four planes and crashed them into the World Trade Center in New York City, as well as the Pentagon in Washington D.C. On Flight 93 the brave passengers gained control of the plane and crashed in a field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. September 11th is recognized Nationally as Patriot Day, a day of service and remembrance. Least we never forget the tragedy of all the souls we lost on this day 24 years ago.

Just a few miles north of Windom, nestled among the rolling prairie, Shalom Hill Farm Retreat Center has been a place of peace, reflection, and community for the past three decades. This Saturday, September thirteenth, Shalom Hill Farm Retreat Center is inviting the public to join in this 30-year special milestone. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., visitors can stroll the farmer’s market, wander through displays and exhibits, and let the kids explore their own zone of fun. Live music will drift across the prairie, and those who haven’t been to the farm in a while will find new treasures, including a labyrinth and walking trails designed for quiet moments and reflection. A free-will offering lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1p.m., and in the early afternoon, guests are invited to gather for “Peace of the Prairie,” a brief, original liturgy celebrating the land and community that Shalom Hill Farm has nurtured since its founding. Founded in the early 1990s by pastors Mark and Margaret Yackel-Juleen, Shalom Hill Farm  Retreat Center began with a vision to give church leaders and community groups a place to slow down, step away from the busyness of life, and reconnect with the rural landscape.. Since then, thousands of visitors over the years, including everyone from quilting guilds and civic organizations to youth groups and international delegations have found their way to the farm’s retreat center gaining a sense of renewal. “Shalom Hill Farm has always been more than a place,” says Paul Erickson, board chair. “It’s an experience, a chance to step away from the noise of daily life and be reminded of the gifts right here in our prairie home.” Saturday’s open house is a chance to experience that same spirit, whether it’s by joining neighbors for lunch, walking the prairie paths, or simply pausing to take in the beauty of the place. Everyone is welcome to come help celebrate at this milestone event. A Ribbon Cutting event by the Windom Area Chamber of Commerce will be held at 11am. Again the public is invited to come and stay or come and go as you please. Shalom Hill Farm is located at 42194 County Road 3, just 15 minutes north of Windom.
