The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MN-DNR) is urging the public to be alert while spending time outdoors, as more illegal methamphetamine labs are being found on public lands, including state forests, parks, and wildlife management areas. While out hunting, hiking, or enjoying nature, if you come across suspicious items that might indicate a meth lab, such as large quantities of household chemicals, propane tanks, rubber tubing, or jugs, do not approach, and contact law enforcement or a DNR conservation officer immediately. Common chemicals involved include cold pills with pseudoephedrine, drain cleaner, acetone, alcohol, and anhydrous ammonia. DNR authorities warn these labs can be highly toxic or even explosive. To learn more about what to look for, visit the Minnesota Department of Health website. Stay alert, stay safe, and help protect Minnesota’s public lands.

One year after historic flooding hit Windom and Jackson, communities are keeping a close watch on the skies again. The forecast for Cottonwood and Jackson Counties shows strong thunderstorms and heavy rainfall for today and tomorrow, with the potential for flash flooding, hail, and damaging winds.

Water levels on the West Fork Des Moines River and nearby creeks could rise quickly. Last June, the area saw river surges of up to seven feet in just 24 hours, leading to widespread damage and evacuations. While the region is still recovering, both Windom and Jackson have taken steps to improve emergency response, repair infrastructure, and strengthen communication. These intense storms echo last year’s June flash floods, but the region is entering this weather cycle with stronger preparedness and local resilience. KDOM will be keeping you updated throughout the day with live reports and updates from the Weatherology Weather Center as storm activity ramps up.
