The Windom City Council met Tuesday night and addressed several items of city business, including a proposed alley vacation, staffing updates, and new telecommunications rates. The Council approved a resolution calling for a public hearing on the proposed vacation of an alley located between 8th and 9th Streets, stretching from 3rd Avenue to 4th Avenue. The alley, which measures approximately 15 feet wide by 159 feet long, lies between Lots 7 and 8 in Block 12 of the Original Townsite of Windom. The public hearing will be held on Tuesday, July 1st, during the regular Council meeting at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall. Notices will be mailed to affected property owners and published in advance, as required by law. Also, during the meeting, Police Chief Scott Peterson announced the hiring of Bryan Rios as a new Windom police officer. Rios, a graduate of Windom Area Schools and Minnesota West Community College’s Law Enforcement Program, brings the department to full staffing — 10 officers — for the first time since 2021. The Council also passed a resolution establishing new rates for the city’s telecommunications enterprise fund. The monthly standalone internet rates are as follows:

  • 10 Mbps for $35 (home Wi-Fi add-on is $9.95), (mega bites per second)
  • 100 Mbps for $85,
  • 250 Mbps for $100, and
  • 1000 Mbps (1 Gig) for $125.

These updated rates were recommended by the Windom Telecommunications Commission and are aimed at keeping the city enterprise fund cost-effective. The resolution passed by a 3-2 vote, with Council Members Scott Benson and James Nelson voting no.
