Mountain Lake City Council met on Monday. Rachel Yoder was present and spoke to the Council on the 105 contour and city easement around her property. The Council continued the discussion on Mills and Overlays on the city streets. According to City Administrator, Michael Mueller, many of the streets within the city are 35 to 40 years old and an overlay could extend roads wear for up to another 20 years without a full street reconstruction. It was thought that the project could be assessed and bonded. The council decided that Mueller will bring the city’s assessment policy to the council at a future meeting.  Discussion was then held on the City Park Beautification Project. The hope is to renovate the City Park. The Trails and Pavilion serve as a vital community space for various events throughout the year, such as the annual Pow Wow celebration. Over time it has suffered from wear and tear and structural issues. This project is essential for revitalizing the community space and promoting social cohesion among residents. The Council stated that before any developments or decisions are made, the city will need estimates on costs and apply for grants.

The Minnesota Department of Health is encouraging families to use the federal supplemental nutrition program for Women, Infants and Children, known as WIC. According to recent reports there are approximately 61,000 Minnesota families who currently aren’t enrolled but would benefit by signing up. NOW I don’t want to get all preachy BUT I use to work for the WIC Office in South Dakota and I KNOW the awesomeness of this program. It is a supplemental program separate from Food Stamps. We are talking cereal, peanutbutter, fresh fruits and vegetables cheese, milk and other amazing foods. You can get help with formula for babies, it gives moms, infants and children FREE health checkups and an opportunity to ask questions and be more aware of safety and healthy ways to help the family. WIC is based on per child and pregnant women benefit too with foods and checkups! Pregnant women, parents- including foster parents and guardians with an infant or child younger than 5 years of age can apply. Families must be income eligible to apply and live in Minnesota. If families are already participating in programs like Medical Assistance or SNAP are automatically income eligible.  If you are interested in learning more about the WIC program go to the MN Department of Health Website and search for WIC.  I am telling you out of ALL the Government led programs personally, I think WIC is one of the BEST!!!
