Windom Area Schools have extended the deadline for students to register for free dental sealants to Friday March 22nd.  This is a great opportunity for parents and guardians to get take a positive step for their child for preventive dental care.  According to Rachel Eiden, M.Ed.

School Coordinator for the Minnesota School Sealant Program, this is a statewide preventive dental care program with a mission to improve the oral health of the children in Minnesota. Eiden went onto say that according to the Center for Disease Control one in every five children aged 5 to 19 have untreated dental decay. This program sends a team of hygienists AKA tooth fairies to the school where they perform services for students. Their program is an “opt-in” program that requires advance sign-up by families via consent form. According to the CDC, after sealants are applied they protect against 80% of cavities for 2 years and continue to protect against 50% of cavities for up to 4 years. School-age children without sealants have almost 3 times more cavities than those with sealants. Untreated cavities can cause pain, infection, and problems eating, speaking, and learning.

Eiden said, The Minnesota School Sealant Team visit schools once per year to provide services. Once a student receives sealants on their teeth, they will last for many years. 1st molars grow in about 2nd grade and then they will need additional sealants once their 2nd molars grow in around 7th grade. They may not need sealants every year, but every student can still participate and receive a cleaning and fluoride varnish from year to year. If you would like more information or like to register your child, you can find consent forms on the Windom School Website or go to www.schoolsealants.com/consentform
