Happy Memorial Day. KDOM would like to take this time to commemorate the service of those men and women that have died in US Military Service. Memorial Day should not to be confused with Veterans Day, which celebrates the service of U.S. military veterans, or with Armed Forces Day, which honors men and women currently in service.

In 2000, Congress passed the National Moment of Remembrance Act, which encourages Americans to observe a moment of silence at 3 p.m. local time to remember those who have died in service.

Congressman James Garfield captured the true meaning of Memorial Day in his 1868 Decoration Day Address at Arlington Cemetery that still rings true today, when he said,  “I am oppressed with a sense of the impropriety of uttering words on this occasion,” “If silence is ever golden, it must be here beside the graves of fifteen thousand men, whose lives were more significant than speech, and whose death was a poem, the music of which can never be sung.”
