Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office reported 43 calls in the week of February 19th  to the 25th. Deputies helped with 2 vehicles off road, conducted 7 Civil Processes, 3 concerns for welfare, and had four traffic stops. Jackson County Sheriff’s Office reported on the 23rd Deputies handled two separate reports of harassment at an apartment complex in Jackson.  On the 24th deputies handled a domestic disturbance and a complaint of a marijuana odor coming from an apartment complex in Jackson and deputies responded to a minor two vehicle accident in Jackson. On the 25th deputies responded to a domestic disturbance in Jackson.  After investigating, a 43 year old male from Jackson county was arrested for Domestic Assault. In the evening a deputy conducted a traffic stop in Heron Lake.  After investigating, a 47 year old male from Worthington was arrested for felony controlled substance possession crimes. And at 10:37pm The Jackson Fire Dept, Windom Fire Dept, and Federated REA were dispatched to a barn fire north of Jackson.  Crews were on scene for about 1 hour. On the 26th mid-morning, A deputy conducted a traffic stop on I-90 near Jackson.  After investigating, the driver was issued a citation for Speed; 85 mph in a 70 mph zone, Possession of Small Amount of Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.  A 31 year old male passenger from North Tonawanda, New York was arrested for 5th Degree Controlled Substance Possession. At approximately Noon  A deputy assisted DOT with traffic control on I-90 near the Heron Lake exit.  The westbound lane was shut down temporarily for a tractor with mechanical issues.  The deputy assisted for about 1/2 hour.

Windom Area Schools reported that the Fall Soccer Program has now expanded to include Madelia. The team will now be comprised of athletes from Windom, St James and Madelia. This will allow both boys and girls teams to compete at a JV and Varsity level next fall.

A Speech competition for Minnesota high school girls is open for applications on March 1st.  Speaking Proudly, selects 24 girls for  the June 17, 2023 competition at the State Capitol.  Judges will award $4,500 to the three top competitors.

Any Minnesota high school girls wanting to take part in the Speaking Proudly oratory competition is encouraged to do so. Securing “the blessings of Liberty” in Twenty-First Century America” is this years topic. It encourages competitors to consider what the blessings of liberty are and how they can be protected and nurtured for all Americans.

Speaking Proudly is a nonpartisan, nonprofit project of Minnesota Federation of Republican Women and the competetion is open to girls in grades nine through 12th (including Spring 2023 graduates) who reside in or attend school in Minnesota.

On February 20th, the Minnesota House of Representatives passed, HF 30, catalytic converter theft prevention legislation, with a 113-15 vote. . “Minnesota ranks in the top five for catalytic converter theft insurance claims. These thefts are hurting Minnesotans pocketbooks as replacements costs can exceed $2,000. This bill will provide additional tools to law enforcement to crack down on these thefts including large scale criminal enterprises.”

This bill will prohibit scrap metal dealers from purchasing a catalytic converter that is not attached to a motor vehicle unless the catalytic converter contains identifying markings that can be used to connect the catalytic converter to a vehicle. Furthermore, scrap metal dealers must collect certain information to aid law enforcement and enter data into an electronic database.
