Sightings of Coyote’s have been reported at Lawcon Park around the Fishing Pier and Aeration Shed. According to Chief of Police, Doug Bristol there have been no reports of aggressive or behavioral issues reported. Bristol went on to say that at this time of year, Coyotes are known to walk across the iced lake seeking open waters and it is rare for coyotes to attack humans, but small pets may be at risk if left unleashed or unattended. Using HAZING techniques which according to Bristol is making loud noises and throwing objects in the direction of the Coyotes can be effective if a person feels uncomfortable or the coyote is showing signs of aggression. Most sightings have been near open water right before dawn near the island. Bristol advises the public to leave the coyotes alone and not to try to get too close to them if seen. If residents witness unusual or aggressive coyote activity, they should contact the Mountain Lake Police Department at 507-427-2999.
