There was some encouraging news at Monday evening’s Windom School Board meeting, as Superintendent Jamie Frank shared an update on student enrollment. Frank reported that as of October 1st, Windom Public Schools had 1,170 students in kindergarten through 12th grade. That’s an increase of 41 students compared to the last day of school this past spring, and one of the highest enrollment numbers the district has seen in the past ten years. What makes that increase especially interesting is that open enrollment numbers have remained about the same. Frank explained that the additional students are families who have actually moved into the Windom community. Frank also provided an update on the school’s wrestling facility construction project. Framing and some sheetrock work have been completed, but the construction crew has temporarily moved to another job. The crew is expected to return in late October, with hopes of making quick progress. The district is also still waiting on a plumbing license, which could affect the project’s timeline. Frank added that the district’s annual audit is underway, with a full report expected to be presented in November.

Mountain Lake residents have several city projects to keep an eye on as the year winds down. During a recent appearance on KDOM’s Kaleidoscope program, Mountain Lake City Administrator Michael Mueller shared updates on the city’s ongoing ash tree removal project. Residents with red dots painted on boulevard ash trees have been notified that those trees need to be removed. Mueller said the city plans to begin removing any remaining marked trees after December 2nd, at a cost of $220 per tree. That includes removing the tree and stump, filling the area with dirt, and planting grass seed. The city hopes to finish removing the remaining boulevard ash trees next year. Mueller also shared some good news for 44 Mountain Lake homeowners, with water service line replacements planned for next spring.
“There’s 44 houses that have lead, galvanized or unknown service lines, completely free of charge for you to basically get a brand new service line for your water from the main, all the way to your meter.”
Those homeowners will be receiving notification and agreement information about the upcoming project. Mueller also discussed the city’s preliminary property tax levy, which has been set at a 9 percent increase. Much of that increase is connected to the new Fire and Ambulance Hall. He emphasized that the levy cannot go any higher, but the City Council will continue reviewing the budget in hopes of bringing that number down before December’s final approval. Residents with questions about any of the projects are encouraged to contact Mountain Lake City Hall.
