The Jeffers City Council met in regular session on September 30th. Councilman Michael Schoper suggested putting a plan in place for the future needs of the fire hall, allowing those interested to make donations toward the project. The council also heard that the city is preparing an application for a Quick Support Grant through the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council, and Keck Tree Service will be trimming trees over city streets. The council also approved the bills and financial report before adjourning.

The Windom City Council covered everything from supporting the fire department to fire safety and the future of the city swimming pool at last nights meeting. River Bend Liquor Manager John Nelson reported on the store’s eighth annual fire department fundraiser. Donations, a special bourbon event and a portion of select Coors product sales all helped raise money for the department. The council approved transferring $566.50 from liquor store sales to the fire department for equipment purchases. Nelson said it’s another way for the municipal liquor store to give back.

Nelson also reminded residents that Operation EDITH will take place Wednesday night at 6:45. Windom firefighters will drive through town with lights and sirens, reminding families to practice their home fire escape plans and choose a safe meeting place outside. The council also received an update on the city swimming pool. City Administrator Steve Nasby said FEMA has denied the city’s second and final appeal for additional funding. Windom was awarded just over $85,000 for repairs, and the city is now waiting for approval to use that money toward demolition instead. Before demolition can happen, the city is required to complete a hazardous materials study. Councilwoman Jenny Quade said she knows residents have wondered why the damaged pool continues to sit there. She stressed, “If we could have knocked this down and taken care of it this summer, we would have done that a long time ago. Just so the public’s aware of that.” The council gave staff the go-ahead to seek quotes for the environmental study, with hopes of moving toward demolition by spring.
