Minnesotans don’t have to wait until November 3rd to cast their ballot in the 2026 General Election. Absentee voting is now underway across Minnesota. Voters can cast an absentee ballot in person at their local election office or request a ballot to vote by mail. For Cottonwood County residents, in-person absentee voting is available at the Cottonwood County Courthouse, located at 900 Third Avenue in Windom. There is also a change coming this year. Beginning Friday, October 16th, Minnesota will offer a new Early Voting process for the first time. Right now, someone voting in person completes an absentee ballot application, marks their ballot and returns it in an envelope. Beginning October 16th, the process will look more like Election Day. Voters will complete a short certificate, receive and mark their ballot, and then place it directly into a ballot counter. If you are voting absentee, pay close attention to the Election Day deadlines. An absentee ballot personally returned to your local election office must be received by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3rd. If you return your absentee ballot by mail or package delivery, it must be RECEIVED by election officials no later than 8 p.m. on November 3rd. A November 3rd postmark is not enough if the ballot arrives after the deadline. Ballots received by the appropriate deadline and accepted by election officials will be counted in the General Election. The final day to vote early in person is Monday, November 2nd. Election Day is Tuesday, November 3rd. Voters can check their registration, request an absentee ballot, view a sample ballot or find their polling place at M-N-Votes-dot-gov.
