Jackson County Sheriff’s Office reported 19 calls from September 18th to September 20th. Among the calls, deputies arrested a 43-year-old Jackson man on a Cottonwood County warrant for felony threats of violence. A 23-year-old Jackson man was also arrested following a disturbance at an apartment complex for disorderly conduct and threats of violence. Deputies responded to reports involving an assault, threats of violence, juvenile issues, a civil dispute and a vehicle that hydroplaned and entered the ditch along Highway 71. Deputies also assisted with a HEAT Team incident in Windom. The Heron Lake Fire Department provided mutual aid at a structure fire west of Windom on Friday. On Sunday night, the Jackson Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at the Earth Inn motel after a stove caught fire, creating heavy smoke but no reported fire damage. Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office reported 46 calls in the week of September 13th to September 19th. The Sheriff’s Office responded to several accident-related calls during the week, including two accidents with injuries, one accident without injuries and one hit-and-run. Deputies also handled two disturbances, two welfare concerns, three calls involving the exchange of information and two warrants. Other calls included a structure fire, an animal complaint, a driving complaint, property damage, debris in the roadway, a computer or phone scam and a court order violation. The report also included one sex crime and one shooting in progress. The Mountain Lake City Council continues to work on its 2027 budget, with a special meeting expected before the end of September to take action on the city’s preliminary property tax levy. Earlier this month, the council reviewed a proposed 2027 budget that included an approximately 11-percent levy increase. Council members asked City Administrator Michael Mueller to identify potential spending reductions and explain what impact those reductions could have on city services. Following Monday night’s council meeting, Mueller told KDOM the council is now looking at a preliminary budget increase ranging between 5 and 11 percent as members continue working through the numbers. Mueller said the council’s goal is to further reduce the budget by December. The September 21 meeting packet had included a proposed preliminary property tax levy of $1,169,671.78, but the council did not vote on that proposal Monday. Mueller said a date has not yet been set for a special council meeting, but it will be held before the September 30 deadline. Monday’s meeting also included discussion of the 2027 Capital Improvement Plan and 2027 budget. Mountain Lake’s Truth in Taxation hearing is scheduled for December 7 at 6 p.m. at City Hall, when residents will have an opportunity to hear more about the city’s proposed budget and property tax levy.

The community is invited to join the Rehabilitation Department for its annual Soup Walk on Friday, October 9th, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 2150 Hospital Drive in Windom. The event celebrates National Physical Therapy Month and begins with a walk around the Be Well Path. Participants can then head to the 4th Floor Community Room for a warm bowl of chili or chicken wild rice soup. The free event is open to everyone and provides an opportunity to enjoy some fresh air, meet members of the care team and recognize the work of the Rehabilitation Department in the community.
