Windom Police reported on August 27th at approximately 1:08pm, an officer took a report of a domestic situation that had just taken place in the 30th Block of 9th Street. Officers responded to the residence and a 32-year-old male of Windom was arrested for Domestic Assault. Also on the 27th at 11:13pm a report of a vehicle that was all over the road on Highway 60 near Heron Lake coming into Windom. An officer observed the vehicle and noted erratic driving and initiated a traffic stop. After investigation, a 26-year-old male of Windom was arrested for Driving While Under the Influence, 3rd Degree Gross Misdemeanor. On the 30th at 7:04pm while on patrol an officer observed an ATV on 12th Street driving recklessly by being on the wrong side of the street and not stopping at a stop sign at 10th Street and 1st Avenue. The officer initiated a traffic stop and after investigation, a 27-year-old male of Windom was charged with possible Fleeing a Peace Officer in a Motor Vehicle and DWI Charges. Both are pending review by the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

The Mountain Lake Chamber of Commerce has a new director, with Darla Kruser stepping into the role and sharing her excitement about working with local businesses and the community. In an introductory letter to Chamber members, Kruser said one of the things she appreciates most about Mountain Lake is the way people come together to support one another and genuinely want to see their neighbors and local businesses succeed. Kruser said she is honored to have the opportunity to serve Mountain Lake’s business community and looks forward to working alongside Chamber members as the organization continues to grow and thrive. As she begins her new r ole, Kruser plans to spend time getting to know Chamber members, learning more about their businesses and goals, and looking for new ways businesses and the Chamber can support one another while strengthening the Mountain Lake community. Windom Area Health presented its 2026 financial audit during Tuesday night’s Windom City Council meeting. Chief Financial Officer John Peril introduced Ryan Strusz, CPA and Principal with CLA, who presented the audit remotely. Strusz reported Windom Area Health received a clean audit opinion with no material audit adjustments and said the organization remains in a strong financial position. Windom Area Health ended the fiscal year with a positive 1.1% operating margin and saw patient service revenue grow approximately 14% during the year. Strusz noted the hospital remained profitable despite increased depreciation and interest expenses associated with the recently completed medical office building project. Strusz said Windom Area Health continues to maintain a strong balance sheet, including more than 200 days of cash on hand, and described 2026 as a strong year for the organization despite continued financial pressures throughout the healthcare industry. Councilman Scott Benson also asked about plans for the unfinished third floor of the new building. Peril said Windom Area Health has an upcoming strategic planning session where expansion of services will be discussed. He said utilizing the space for physical therapy is one possibility, but no decision has been made. Peril expects the organization to have more concrete ideas for the space in the near future.

The Mountain Lake City Council will meet tonight, Tuesday, September 8th. A Closed Special City Council Meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. for the council to receive confidential legal advice regarding the strengths, weaknesses and risks associated with the enforcement of litigation. The regular council meeting is scheduled for 5:45 p.m., but may begin later following the closed session. Regular agenda items include the proposed 2027 budget, orderly annexation, animal control and commission and board updates.

The Des Moines Valley Health and Human Services Board will meet Thursday, September 10th at 9 a.m. at the Cottonwood County Law Enforcement Center in Windom. Agenda items include presentation and acceptance of the 2025 DVHHS audit, findings from a Family Resource Center exploration, and consideration of 2027 employee health insurance rates and benefit plans. The Board will also receive updates from Fiscal, Human Services, Public Health and Administrative Services.
