An application submitted to the Windom Economic Development Authority brought discussion and clarification to the Roots to Wings Child Care Provider Loan Program during the EDA’s August 10th meeting. Longtime child care provider Tamera Mischke applied for a $6,000 loan through the program. Mischke has provided child care for 25 years and is currently licensed for 14 children. While reviewing the application, EDA members discussed the guidelines for existing child care providers and whether they were meeting the original intent of the program. That discussion resulted in changes to make the loan terms clearer. Under the revised guidelines, existing child care providers can receive a loan of up to $6,000, with payments of $100 a month for five years. Providers can pay the loan off early, and if two-thirds is repaid within 30 months, the final one-third will be forgiven. On a $6,000 loan, that could mean $2,000 in loan forgiveness. The EDA unanimously approved the revised guidelines and then approved Mischke’s $6,000 loan application under the updated program.

There has been an AMAZING response to this year’s Coats for Kids and School Supply Drive and KDOM wants to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped FILL our donation box! Donations of winter coats and school supplies at KDOM surpassed our goals, and once again, our listeners showed just how generous this community can be. Wednesday, August 19th, is the final day of the drive, with donations being picked up from all collection sites, including KDOM, DVHHS, Runnings, Windom Area Health, BARC and participating Windom churches. Then, the donated items will be ready for families during Distribution Day on Wednesday, August 26th, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the BARC, 1012 5th Avenue in Windom. DVHHS and UCAP organize the annual drive to help local children head back to school with the supplies they need and a warm coat for the colder months ahead. From all of us at KDOM, THANK YOU to everyone who donated. You didn’t just fill our box you helped fill a need in our community.
