Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office reported 32 calls in the week of August 2nd to August 8th. The weekly report included 10 civil process calls, two ambulance medical calls, two driving complaints, two public assists and two warrants. Deputies also responded to one accident with no injuries, an animal bite, a damage to property report, debris in the roadway and a theft. Other activity included assisting another agency, an attempt to locate, court security, a parking violation and an Order for Protection or Harassment Restraining Order violation. The Sheriff’s Office also reported one sexual assault call during the week. Windom Police investigated a hit and run on the 11th in the KDOM parking lot at 7:23 a.m. A 2018 Ford Fusion was parked in the lot while the owner was inside at Flofitness. When the owner came out of the building she found a large scrape on the passenger side door that wasn’t there before. It is unknown who the other vehicle was.

The Windom Ambulance Service will receive nearly 50-thousand dollars to help recruit and train new EMTs. At the August 4th Windom City Council meeting, City Administrator Steve Nasby presented a 49-thousand-824-dollar Ambulance Service Training and Staffing Grant awarded through the Minnesota Office of Emergency Medical Services. The grant will allow at least three new EMT recruits to be paid while completing their education, certification and on-the-job training. The program is designed to make EMT training more accessible while addressing staffing shortages facing ambulance services across Minnesota. There is no local match and no anticipated fiscal impact to the city. According to the Windom Ambulance Service, three longtime retirees have not been replaced over the past two years. The service currently has 20 active members, while its call volume continues to increase. During discussion, Councilman Jim Nelson asked whether there was more the community could do to help recruit new members, noting the ambulance service is getting short on personnel. Nasby said the city has supported the department with the ambulances and equipment it needs, but staffing remains the challenge. He encouraged residents to consider volunteering their time, helping their neighbors and supporting the ambulance service through a community-wide recruiting effort. The council unanimously approved accepting the grant and authorizing the necessary paperwork. The grant runs through June 30th of 2027.

The 2026 Butterfield Steam and Gas Engine Show starts today, with gates opening at 4:30 p.m. at Voss Park in Butterfield. The 59th annual show features more than 250 antique tractors, along with steam engines, classic vehicles, pioneer displays, food and entertainment. Gates open at 7 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
