Police Officers conducted 25 Predatory Offender Checks, 5 Concerns for Welfare, 2 Public Assists and 34 Traffic Stops. Officers investigated a Damage to Property, a Fraud, a Theft, 3 Suspicious Activities, 4 Suspicious Persons and 6 Suspicious Vehicles. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department reported 25 calls from July 24th to July 26th. Among the incidents, deputies investigated reports of littering, child custody issues, trespassing, thefts, a residential burglary, suspicious vehicles and people, and several commercial burglary alarms that were determined to be false. Deputies also assisted with multiple medical calls and conducted welfare checks. Traffic enforcement kept deputies busy over the three-day period, with citations issued for driving after revocation, speeding, driving without a Minnesota driver’s license, and no proof of insurance. Dispatch also transferred several 911 calls to the Minnesota State Patrol involving road rage, reckless driving, drag racing, and a vehicle that struck a deer. Emergency responders from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson Ambulance, Jackson Fire Department, and the Minnesota State Patrol responded to a serious rollover crash with injuries on Interstate 90 east of Jackson after a vehicle crossed the median and overturned. Deputies also responded to an accidental gunshot wound to the hand, reports of someone shining a laser at passing vehicles, and a crash detection alert that turned out to have been triggered by a cell phone falling from the roof of a moving vehicle. A detour for the Highway 59 box culvert replacement project near Jack Creek, located between Fulda and Worthington, is expected to begin Aug. 5, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Motorists will be detoured to Nobles County Roads 14, 1, and 16 until the project is completed in early October. All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather dependent and may change. MnDOT urges drivers to stay alert and use caution in work zones where workers are present. The project will replace the existing arch pipe with a box culvert bridge near Jack Creek under Highway 59 to improve drainage and enhance safety. R & G Construction Co. was awarded the project with a bid of $865,548.54.

The Windom Area School Board has approved a new Cardiac Emergency Response Plan designed to improve the district’s response to sudden cardiac emergencies involving students, staff, or visitors. School Nurse Jessica Matt presented the plan to the board at their Monday Night meeting, explaining that sudden cardiac arrest is the number one killer of student athletes. She shared that sudden cardiac arrest affects an estimated 23,000 youth each year, and one in 300 young people has an undiagnosed heart condition that could put them at risk. Nationally, one young athlete dies from sudden cardiac arrest every three days. Matt explained that sudden cardiac arrest is different from a heart attack. Cardiac arrest is an electrical problem where the heart suddenly stops beating and requires immediate CPR and AED use. The new plan establishes Cardiac Emergency Response Teams at each school building and outlines procedures for staff, coaches, and emergency responders. The goal is to have trained responders, CPR, and AED access available as quickly as possible during an emergency. Windom Area Schools currently has 11 AED units located throughout district facilities, including schools, track, Island Park and Recreation Fields. The district recently received a $39,105 grant from the Minnesota Department of Education to expand cardiac emergency equipment and preparedness efforts. Three new AEDs were purchased with grant funds for the track, Island Park, and recreation fields. The district is also partnering with Project ADAM, which will provide hands-only CPR and AED training for staff on August 25th. The partnership will help Windom Area Schools become a designated Heart Safe School. It was noted that all coaches are required to complete CPR and AED training.

The Mountain Lake Community Theatre is bringing one of Broadway’s most beloved musicals to the stage this summer with its production of Fiddler on the Roof. Audiences are invited to journey to the village of Anatevka and experience the timeless story of Tevye, his family, and the traditions that shape their lives. The musical features unforgettable songs including “If I Were a Rich Man” and “Sunrise, Sunset.” Performances of Fiddler on the Roof will be held at the Mountain Lake Public School Auditorium, located at 450 12th Street North in Mountain Lake. Show times are Thursday, July 30th at 7 p.m.; Friday, July 31st at 7 p.m.; Saturday, August 1st at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, August 2nd at 2:30 p.m. The production features local performers and is open to audiences of all ages. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and children. The Mountain Lake Community Theatre invites the community to enjoy an evening of music, storytelling, and a classic Broadway favorite.
