Mountain Lake Police Department reported 35 calls from July 6th to July 19th. Officers handled a variety of incidents during that time, including medical assists, traffic enforcement, animal complaints, civil disputes, and reports involving possible criminal activity. The department responded to several domestic-related calls, including one investigation that resulted in the arrest of a 38-year-old Mountain Lake man for domestic assault and a 24-year-old Mountain Lake woman for an alleged violation of a Domestic Abuse No Contact Order. Officers also investigated a possible fraud report, an assault complaint referred to the City Attorney’s Office, and assisted other emergency responders with a farm accident. Other calls included scam reports, dog complaints, 911 hang-ups, and a golf cart crash that remains under investigation for possible DWI. Windom Police Department were contacted on the 20th regarding a Burglary/Theft in the 1900 Block of Great Bend Blvd. According to the report it is unknow when the theft occurred. The reporting party stated someone had entered the garage and stole tires off a vehicle and the house door was pushed in, with furniture and other items also missing. Value of missing items is unknown at this time. The matter remains under investigation. Also on the 20th at approximately 8:49am a City of Windom employee reported damage to a City of Windom Light Pole that was knocked over in the 1500 block of 1st Avenue by United Prairie Bank. After investigation, it was determined a semi grain trailer struck the pole when traveling toward New Vision. Estimated cost to repair the pole with labor and equipment is approximately $3,440.00. The matter is under further investigation.

The Windom City Council approved a conditional use permit Tuesday night allowing LaCanne Family Celebration of Life Center to construct and operate a pet crematory in the North Windom Industrial Park. The facility will be located at 4111 Commerce Boulevard on property owned by the Windom Economic Development Authority. Building and Zoning Administrator Matt Fast said the application was contingent upon the city’s recent zoning ordinance change, which now allows a pet crematory as a conditional use in the city’s I-1 Light Industrial District. Fast told the council the Windom Planning Commission held a public hearing on July 14 and unanimously recommended approval. He said no residents attended the hearing and the city received no public comments or questions about the proposal. The permit includes several conditions. The business must maintain a current license from the Minnesota Board of Animal Health, comply with all Minnesota Pollution Control Agency permits and regulations, prohibit the scattering or commingling of remains on the property, keep all equipment and materials stored indoors, comply with all applicable city code requirements, and complete construction within one year or the permit will be revoked. Council discussion also clarified that while existing facilities were allowed under previous regulations, any new pet crematory must be approved under the city’s current zoning ordinance. The conditional use permit was approved unanimously by the council.

It may still feel like summer, but cooler days and the start of a new school year will be here before we know it. Donations are now being collected for the annual Cottonwood County Coats for Kids and School Supply Drive, helping local children head back to school prepared and stay warm during the colder months ahead. DVHHS and UCAP are once again partnering to provide children in Cottonwood County with school supplies and winter gear to help them get ready for the school year and through the cold winter months. Donations are being collected now through August 19th and can be dropped off at several locations throughout the area, including:
KDOM, DVHHS Windom offices, American Lutheran Church, Runnings, Windom Area Health, Baptist Church, Windom Methodist Church, Lutheran Church of Our Savior, BARC, and First Presbyterian Church in Windom.
Community members are encouraged to donate coats, gloves, mittens, snow pants, boots, and school supplies. Please make sure all donated items are clean and have minimal wear and tear. KDOM is making it even easier to help by serving as a convenient drop-off location for donations. If you would like to help but don’t have time to shop, KDOM can do the shopping for you.
