The Windom Police Department is investigating several reports of theft and vehicle tampering this week. On Monday, July 14th, officers took a report of a stolen cellphone from Cottonwood Lake at Tegels Park. An 11-year-old girl from Windom accidentally left her phone in the pavilion building and when she returned, it was gone. The loss is estimated at $250.
Then on Tuesday, July 15th, police received six separate reports of vehicle tampering. A 2014 Hyundai Accent in the 800 block of Redding Avenue was broken into and had damage to the steering column. A 2018 Kia Sportage in the 1300 block of 2nd Avenue had damage around the driver’s side keyhole. A 2017 Buick LaCrosse in the 1300 block of 5th Avenue was entered, but nothing was taken. Police also investigated damage to a 2007 Chevy Uplander in the 800 block of Redding Avenue and a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee in the 700 block of Redding Avenue.
Officers are also reviewing surveillance video from Ryan’s Small Engine Repair at 1355 9th Avenue. The business owner reported that while working at about 4:52 a.m. on July 9th, he heard a lawn mower start up, causing the suspect to flee. Security video reportedly shows an individual wearing a sweatshirt, face mask, Crocs and sweatpants jogging across the property and jumping a barbed-wire fence behind the shop.
In a separate case, a $100 trampoline safety net was reported stolen from a home in the 700 block of 12th Street just minutes after it was delivered by FedEx.
All of the incidents remain under investigation.

Residents interested in serving on the Windom City Council now have the opportunity to file for office. The City of Windom has announced that candidate filing for three City Council seats opened on Tuesday, July 14, and continues through Tuesday, July 28th. The offices up for election are Council Member, Ward I, currently held by Jenny Quade; Council Member, Ward II, currently held by James Nelson; and the Council Member At-Large seat, currently held by Dennis Esplan. The positions carry four-year terms that will begin on January 2, 2027. Candidates may file during regular business hours, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Office of the City Administrator at Windom City Hall, located at 444 Ninth Street in Windom. On the final day of filing, Tuesday, July 28, the office will remain open until 5 p.m. to accept candidate filings. Individuals interested in running for office are encouraged to contact City Hall regarding candidate qualifications, filing requirements and any applicable filing fee. The City Council election will take place on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. As of today, the City has not announced whether any of the current council members plan to seek re-election.

Insurance Nerd Day is celebrated annually on July 18, shining a spotlight on the dedicated professionals who find passion in the intricacies of insurance. This day recognizes those who not only work in the industry but genuinely love it, often discussing policies and risk management in their free time. I for one love each one of them because insurance is like accounting to me, just another brick on the wall.
