The Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce is warning local businesses to be on the lookout for counterfeit money that has reportedly been circulating in the surrounding area. The Chamber put out a release on Friday that advised businesses to pay close attention when accepting cash, especially $20 bills, which have been specifically identified in recent reports. Business owners and employees are encouraged to carefully inspect bills before accepting them and to follow their normal procedures for identifying suspicious currency. The Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce says the alert is being shared as a precaution and is encouraging businesses to remain vigilant. Anyone who believes they have received counterfeit money should contact local law enforcement and avoid putting the suspected bill back into circulation.

The Windom City Council is still waiting for an update on the long-discussed Red Leaf Court flood mitigation project. During last week’s council meeting, City Administrator Steve Nasby told council members that the city continues to seek information from Johnson Engineering Group but has not yet received an updated timeline. Nasby said the city has sent multiple follow-up emails and is hoping to receive at least an estimated schedule so officials can answer questions from residents who continue to inquire about the project. The project stems from ongoing flooding problems in the Red Leaf Court and 18th Avenue area. According to a feasibility study completed by Johnson Engineering Group, the neighborhood has experienced significant flooding events in 1992, 2007, 2019 and most recently in 2024, with some homes suffering repeated basement flooding and water depths of more than two feet. In October of 2025, the City Council approved a resolution ordering improvements and directed Johnson Engineering Group to prepare plans and specifications for the project, officially known as the 18th Avenue Storm Sewer Improvement Project. The engineering study concluded that the existing 33-inch storm sewer along the east side of 18th Avenue is too small to handle runoff from the 581-acre watershed that drains into the area. Engineers recommended a larger storm sewer system on the west side of 18th Avenue as the best long-term solution to significantly reduce flooding in both the Red Leaf Court neighborhood and nearby farmland. At this time, city officials say they are continuing to wait for additional information from the engineering firm before the project can move forward.
