The Windom Park & Recreation Commission heard several updates as the city moves into the busy spring and summer season at its meeting in April. Recreation Director Tim Hogan reported that ice has been removed from the arena and crews are now preparing for livestock and horse show events. He also said the local hockey association is planning upgrades to the arena, including a new four-sided center-ice scoreboard and sound system. Installation will begin once the equipment arrives. Summer recreation plans are also moving ahead. Information for summer activities are available in the Windom Community Education Booklet and online registration is now open for summer programs. A new batting cage has been installed at the recreation area, and new base anchors are planned for the ball fields. Park Superintendent Jon Ketzenberg told commissioners work continues on the shelter project at Island Park. Water lines have been installed, and the city is waiting for final wall work before fixtures can be added. The goal is to have the shelter completed by early summer. City staff are also working on bids for an ADA-compliant sidewalk, and online reservations for the shelter are expected once construction is finished. Ketzenberg also reported that docks are in at Cottonwood Lake. The deer hunt will continue this season in Mayflower Park and along the river near Windom Area High School. During old business, Commissioner Scott Benson asked what steps would be needed to sell Dynamite Park. It had previously been discussed with the Windom Economic Development Authority for possible development, but earlier discussion found there may not be enough land available to make development practical. Commissioners also discussed future ideas, including the possibility of an additional boat landing at Cottonwood Lake. Members noted the idea would likely require approval from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources because the city does not control lake access. The next Windom Park & Recreation meeting will be May 13th at 5:30 p.m. in the Windom City Council Chambers.
