Minnesotans will have a great opportunity to get outside and enjoy the changing season later this month, as the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is offering free admission to all 73 state parks and recreation areas on Saturday, April 25th. The annual Free Park Day means vehicle permit fees are waived, making it easier for residents and visitors alike to explore everything Minnesota’s parks have to offer. The DNR hosts four fee-free days each year, giving people a chance to experience the parks in every season. In addition to April 25, the remaining Free Park Days in 2026 are scheduled for Saturday, June 13th, Saturday, September 12th, and Friday, November 27th. DNR Parks and Trails Division Director Ann Pierce says spring is an ideal time to visit, as wildlife becomes more active, wildflowers begin to bloom, and trees start to leaf out after the long winter months. Visitors are encouraged to recreate responsibly by observing wildlife from a distance, staying on designated trails, and leaving natural items like flowers and rocks undisturbed. Several parks will also host special naturalist-led programs throughout the day. Highlights include “Pages and Pines” at Jay Cooke State Park, a Bingo Scavenger Hunt at Itasca State Park, a Sand Point cleanup at Frontenac State Park, and a guided birding walk at Blue Mounds State Park. While admission is free on these select days, visitors should note that fees for camping, rentals, and other activities may still apply. More information, including a full list of events and park details, can be found on the Minnesota DNR website www.mndnr.gov/freeparkdays
