A big congratulations going out to Ron Nickel of Bingham Lake, who is this year’s Grand Prize winner of the 37th Annual Farm 40 Free Giveaway. The drawing was held yesterday at the Windom Community Center, where finalists, sponsors, vendors, and members of the Ag community gathered for a day celebrating local farming. More than $9,000 in prizes were awarded with everything and a little more needed to farm 40 acres of corn. Nickel, whose official entry came from Smith Auto, says hearing his name called was something he won’t forget.

Nickel has been farming since returning to the family operation in 1979 and says the win is especially meaningful for smaller farmers.

He also praised the event for recognizing the importance of agriculture.

Farm 40 Free Giveaway continues to highlight and support area producers, and they look forward to following Ron’s progress from planting through harvest this season.

The Mountain Lake Chamber of Commerce has announced the purchase of a historic property that will become the future home of the Chamber and Visitor Center. The building known locally as the former Falk Station will be renovated to create a dedicated space with regular hours for both residents and visitors. Chamber officials say the project will take time and funding, with plans underway to pursue grants and launch community fundraising efforts. Volunteers have already begun cleaning out the building, uncovering vintage items like 1960s magazines, but no valuable items to help fund renovations. The Chamber is now asking for community support through monetary donations, volunteer labor, and in-kind contributions. Donations can be mailed to the Chamber at PO Box 553, Mt Lake MN 56159 or dropped off at Mt Lake City Hall. A community workday is also being planned, and donors will be recognized on a wall inside the completed building. To follow the progress or get more information check out the Mountain Lake Chamber of Commerce Facebook Page. Chamber leaders say the project is an important investment in the future of Mountain Lake and a true example that it takes a village.
