What began as a strategic move to bring the 2020 Hospital Drive medical clinic under local ownership has taken an unexpected detour. Windom Area Health (WAH) recently went public with its attempt to purchase the building, currently owned by a private developer and leased to Avera Health, after a series of high-level board deliberations that began in late January. Last month, the Windom Area Health Board of Directors moved to purchase the medical office building at 2020 Hospital Drive. CEO Shelby Medina says the goal was simple: bring the facility under local ownership while honoring Avera’s current 15-year lease. Initially, Avera showed no interest in buying the property, which was publicly listed by a private developer. However, following a series of closed-session meetings by the Windom Board, the situation shifted. Medina reports that Windom Area Health received notice that Avera had a change of heart. Avera exercised its “right of first refusal,” moving to purchase the building themselves and effectively blocking the local offer. While the ownership will change hands, the clinic’s services are expected to continue under the terms of the existing lease.
