The Jeffers City Council met on the 15th. One item drawing public comment came from a resident who asked the council to consider reducing dog fines for the coming year. Following discussion, the council voted 4–1 to reduce the maximum dog fine from $1,250 to $950. Council member Sheila Ryker cast the lone dissenting vote. The council also approved setting dog fines to begin at $50 starting January 1, 2026. Council members discussed the condition of the property located at 312 South Courthouse Avenue. Mayor Prins will follow up with the Cottonwood County Auditor/Treasurer regarding the matter. The clerk also provided an update on a dangerous dog situation within the city. Several resolutions were approved unanimously, including adopting liens for unpaid charges, designating the polling place for the 2026 election, approving the 2026 tax levy and final city budget, and approving an LRIP Farm-to-Market application.
The council approved 2025 pay rates for the mayor, council members, and zoning officials. Members also voted to split the Minnesota Paid Leave cost of 0.66 percent equally between the city and its employees. In a separate vote, city staff were approved for a 3 percent wage increase effective January 1, 2026, with Council Member Ryker voting against the motion. The clerk presented a letter of resignation from City Attorney Ron Schramel, effective April 1, 2026. The clerk will consult with Schramel on recommendations for filling the position. The council approved paying all remaining bills for 2025 and canceled the December 22nd meeting due to the Christmas holiday.

I cannot believe that I am actually saying this but we are on the slow countdown to 2026. I hope that your Christmas was jolly and bright and you found time to just be and reflect on the reason for the season. Happy Boxing Day!! Did you know that today is one of the most popular days to return Christmas gifts to the stores? My wish is that you don’t have to do this… It brings back bad memories of Black Friday to me!!! Stay home and celebrate National Thank you Note Day… That seems to be a forgotten tradition. It is amazing how much a simple thank you means to the person giving a heartfelt gift whether it be monetary or from the heart. I’m not going to get on my soapbox but it is amazing how many people don’t say thank you, I appreciate the thought… they just take the gift and act as if they never received it. In today’s society with all the texting and e-mailing there is just no excuse and really a handwritten note just means everything.. Parents you are or have failed your children(young or old) if they do not acknowledge receiving a gift of any kind! Do better! Okay sorry I stepped up on the box.. I do wish you a wonderful week leading up to the New Year!!
