Mountain Lake Police Department recorded 17 calls from September 29th to October 4th. Officers conducted several traffic stops delt with a couple dogs at large, assisted other agencies, responded to a couple of concerns of welfare and continue to investigate a Report of fake $50 bills being found. Windom Police Department were called to Ag Builders on the 6th for a report of a theft, that took place between Saturday afternoon and Monday Morning from cargo trailers that were locked on their lot. According to the report Multiple power tools and batteries were taken out of two different cargo trailers. The list provided by the reporting party shows multiple tools including 20 DeWalt tool batteries, 60V and 20V, DeWalt band saw, yellow DeWalt Battery charger, a red Milwaukee Saw etc. Estimated loss is $4,800. Also reported from Ag Builders, an employee discovered that his loose change and a phone charger had been taken from a cup holder in his Peterbilt Semi.
On the 7th at 7:52pm an officer spoke with a Windom resident who reported a theft of car battery chargers from the 1300 Block of 3rd Avenue that happened on the 1st. The reporting party stated the hoods of the vehicles were open on the vehicles in her driveway. The car batteries were charging, and someone came and stole them from the driveway. The reporting party stated that one of the chargers was valued at $100 and the other was a gift, so she was not aware how much it was worth. Windom Police responded to a 3-vehicle accident at 10:43pm at the intersection of Highway 60 and HyVee. A 2023 Ford Econoline Community Transit bus was traveling eastbound on 10th Street when a 2019 Honda Odyssey crossed the intersection and struck the driver’s side of Econoline which then resulted in the Odyssey being pushed into a 2014 Ford Escape on the other side of 10th Street. Both the Econoline and the Odessey were towed from the scene. Windom Ambulance was called to the scene but no transport to the hospital was needed.

The Cottonwood County Landfill is holding two special collection events this October. The Fall Tire Collection is set for Tuesday, October 14th from noon to 6 p.m. Tires will be accepted at a special rate of 15 cents per pound some exclusions may apply. Then on Saturday, October 18th, from 8 a.m. to noon, it’s the Fall Household Hazardous Waste Collection. Items accepted include things like old paint, stains, household cleaners, pesticides, fluorescent bulbs, and other chemicals that shouldn’t be tossed in the regular trash. Both events will be held at the Cottonwood County Landfill on County Road 22 in Windom. These are one-day only collections, so residents are encouraged to plan ahead. Telephone customers of Windomnet experienced an unexpected outage affecting 911 service on Wednesday afternoon, October 7th. The issue impacted the Next Generation 911 system, which connects callers directly to emergency services. According to General Manager Jeff Dahna, Windomnet crews worked alongside network partners and emergency providers to identify and resolve the problem. One of the key network elements was restored late Wednesday night, and service was confirmed fully operational just after midnight, at 12:01 a.m. on October 8th, following successful test calls to the Cottonwood County Law Enforcement Center. Dahna thanked customers for their patience, emphasizing the critical importance of reliable 911 service to the community. The Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners met on the 7th, covering a range of personnel, infrastructure, and health insurance items. Commissioners approved a conditional use permit for Larry Michelson to construct a garage and storage shed in a shoreland area. They also recessed to act as the Ditch Authority, moving forward with the redetermination of benefits for several county drainage systems, with a final order expected at the board’s October 21st meeting. In personnel matters, commissioners approved all promotions and retirements. Commissioners made adjustments to the county’s health insurance plans, approving an increase to the single coverage cap from $1,000 to $1,200 per month starting in 2026. They also increased VEBA/HSA contributions for family coverage to $600 per month and opted to stay with the current four Blue Cross Blue Shield plans. On infrastructure, the board awarded a $1.81 million contract to Towne & Country Excavating, LLC as the lowest responsible bidder on an upcoming county project. Commissioners also approved October warrants totaling $248,660.25.
