Police Chief Scott Peterson released the following Press Release mid afternoon yesterday: “On July 23, 2025, at approximately 5:19 AM, the Windom Police Department was dispatched to the 1400 block of 12th Avenue for a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located a 70-year-old female who had suffered gunshot wounds. Officers provided first aid until Windom Ambulance was on the scene. The female was transported to Windom Area Health. At 5:28 A.M. officers were advised that a male had broken into a residence in the 1200 block of River Road and was in the bathroom. Officers responded to the scene and located a 38-year-old male. He was taken into custody for burglary and transported to Windom Area Health for treatment for injuries that occurred from the incident. After treatment, the male was transported to the Cottonwood County Jail. At this time, it is believed that the two incidents are connected. The 70-year-old female that was transported to Windom Area Health later died from her injuries. This is an ongoing investigation. More information will be provided later. There is no threat to the public currently. The Windom Police Department was assisted by the Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, and the Windom Ambulance.

Jackson County Sheriff’s Department released the following Press Release last night: On July 21st, at about 8:13 AM, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call of a RAGBRAI rider that had collapsed on the bike route on Jackson County Road 4 west of MN 86. Within seconds, the victim was tended to by a doctor, a surgeon, and a physician’s assistant all of whom were also RAGBRAI participants. The Lakefield Ambulance was paged to the scene and were joined by (4) RAGBRAI paramedics who transported the victim to the Spirit Lakes Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The victim was identified as Kelly Paul, age 54, of Texas.
The Business, Arts and Recreation Center, better known as BARC is inviting the public to a full day of fun, food, and fundraising on Monday, July 28. Festivities begin with BARC’s annual Community Block Party, featuring a picnic supper on the east lawn from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. For a $10 donation, attendees can enjoy a brat or burger with chips, baked beans, a drink and cookie. Kids 10 and under eat for $5, with take-out meals will be available. Food will be prepared by Hy-Vee, with generous donations from local supporters including Culligan, Curt Determan, Windom Kwik Trip, and Thrivent. Following the meal, BARC will host its 24th Annual Meeting at approximately 6:45 p.m., also on the east lawn. The meeting includes a review of the past year and election of board members. Community members interested in joining the board are encouraged to reach out to BARC President Ashley Johnson. Leading up to Monday Nights Festivities BARC’s Silent Auction fundraiser is underway in the BARC Library, with over 100 items up for bid ranging from home goods and gift certificates to collectibles and a year’s worth of McDonald’s meals. Bidding continues through Friday the 25th from noon to 5:30 p.m., and again on July 28th starting at 9 a.m. Bidding will close after the Annual Meeting that evening. All funds raised will support BARC’s operations and a major repair project on the aging boiler system, with costs estimated at more than $50,000. As a nonprofit that relies on local donations, memberships, and rentals, BARC is encouraging community support now more than ever.
