So, I am not here to get all political but TODAY is Car Keys and Small Change Day… And if you have not been paying attention, the penny and nickel are not a favored small coin to a lot of critics. AND in the middle of the Super Bowl 59 or as Gronkowski says LIX it is said that the President posted on social media that he was getting rid of the penny… I can neither confirm nor deny this- as I am not that big on social media, BUT when I was told this, I was super sad. The penny is like a reminder from Heaven every time I find one on the ground and it is a staple in my mind to the growth of a child. I did a little research and yes, last year the US Mint lost $85 million making pennies, and approximately $18 million making nickels this is according to the bureau’s annual report. BUT the good news is just because the mint didn’t make money on pennies and nickels it doesn’t mean they are losing money overall. Last year the mint earned a profit of about $100 million, making the country’s pocket change. Whether you like the penny or not, the coin is disappearing on its own. Annually throughout the 1990’s the mint made approximately 11 billion pennies each year and then in the 2020’s the Mint made about 5 billion pennies and so far in 2025 it has only made about $25 million pennies

I get it, there are a lot of people that think coins are just a nuisance, but I truly hope in my lifetime they never go away. Plastic is okay I guess and convenient BUT I LOVE filling my fancy jars with coins, turning them in to see how rich I really am!!! It used to be a fun time with my kids counting and putting them in the rolls. We went out for fun dinners and got amazing treats A LOT because of those so-called nuisance coins.
