On Tuesday, San Deigo California resident, No Name Given, Happy was in court with his attorney Stephanie Skoro requesting a reduction in bail that was initially set for $750,000 bond with conditions or $1 million without conditions. Opposing the request was Cottonwood County Attorney Deja Weber. The motion was denied and Happy’s next court appearance was scheduled for January 31st at 3:15pm for an omnibus hearing which is a pretrial hearing, that is usually held soon after a defendant’s arraignment. The main purpose of the hearing is to determine the evidence, including testimony and evidence seized at the time of arrest. Happy is currently being housed at the Cottonwood County Jail with two counts of second-degree murder, second degree assault with a dangerous weapon and threats of violence in connection with the stabbing on New Years Eve at the Phat Pheasant Pub that resulted in the death of Benjamen Matter of Windom and two other men sustaining non-life-threatening injuries

This weekend could be packed full of fun and nature! Take a Kid Ice Fishing Weekend is Saturday, the 18th through Monday, January 20th. During this three-day weekend, any Minnesota resident can go fishing for free if fishing with a child 15 years old or younger. In Minnesota, anyone 15 years old or younger don’t need fishing licenses any time of the year. January 20th is the first FREE PARK DAY for 2025 in any Minnesota State Park and Recreation Area. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources waves vehicle permit fees at all 73 state parks and recreation areas four times a year. Free Days are held once per new season. The 2025 free park days are set for Monday, January 20th, Saturday, April 26th, Saturday June 14th and Friday November 28th. According to Ann Pierce, Director of DNR’s Parks and Trails Division, “Minnesota state parks truly shine year-round, and winter is a special time to embrace the state’s natural beauty and recreational opportunities.” In winter, visitors can participate in popular activities like sledding, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, if snow conditions are suitable. There are also many winter outdoor activities that don’t require snow, such as birding, wildlife watching, winter hiking, nature photography, and having a campfire with hot chocolate and s’mores. So, take the opportunity this weekend to get out and enjoy nature. If you are new to ice fishing, you can check out the helpful how-to’s and ice safety information on the DNR Website www.mndnr.gov/takeakidicefishing www.mndnr.gov/freeparkdays

Burrr…. I don’t know about you but this week of below zero temperatures are NOT my favorites! I am not a Rum connoisseur, but it is National Hot Buttered Rum Day and I am feeling the need to try it out to warm my inners!!! I’d be all about going out and flying a kite to celebrate Benjamen Franklin Day but I fear that my fingers would freeze and my kite would not take flight, so I think I’ll look at a dollar bill and maybe eat turkey????
