Mountain Lake Police Department reported 28 calls from January 6th to January 12th. A press release was sent out on the 13th concerning a welfare check that shots were fired, and a taser was used in the 500 block of Klein Street. Jackson County Sheriff’s Department had 18 calls from January 10th to January 13th. Deputies responded to a driving complaint on I-90 near the Nobles County line. A vehicle was reported to have entered the median and struck and object causing damage and was continuing eastbound. A deputy located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The Jeffers City Council met on the 13th. Mayor Brad Prins, and Councilman Curt Determan, took the Oath of Office and the council reviewed City Offices and unanimously voted to keep the city offices the same.

Assistant Fire Chief of the Jeffers Fire Department, Cory Schroeder was present to report on the Radio Grant from the Department of Public Safety that the department received, all radios for the fire department and first responders will be upgraded. It was reported that this grant is on a reimbursement basis so the City of Jeffers will need to pay for the radios and will be reimbursed by the Department of Public Safety. The State Bank of Jeffers has agreed to pay 5% of the $55,000 cost and the city will pay the remaining portion. The council voted to pay the cost of the radios to be reimbursed. There was also discussion that the fire department has a committee that is currently looking for a different tanker truck. The Council then approved the 2025 Ambulance Contract from the City of Westbrook and a building permit for a wheelchair ramp. Two Resolutions were adopted:
Resolution #2025-01 The City of Jeffers DOES NOT WAIVE Monetary Limits on municipal tort liability established by the Minnesota Statutes, Section 466.04 to the extent of the limits of the liability coverage obtained from the LMCIT.
Resolution #2025-02 Resolution setting fees and charges for 2025.
The Council reviewed city fees and voted unanimously to raise the fee for lawn mowing services to $100/hour and to increase the reconnection fee for water services when shut off due to non-payment to $75.
Lance Holmen, Maintenance, reported there have been more water line breaks due to the extreme cold weather and no snow cover. Holmen requested that the cold weather warning go into effect. Anyone connected to city water should run a pencil width stream of water from one faucet. A resident who continues to let their dog run at large was issued a $300 fine.
