Today is the second Friday of the month and January 10th. It is Houseplant Appreciation Day. I am not so much a green thumb BUT I love plants of all kinds and I become quite attached to my plants and appreciate them on probably a higher level than most. I have a Christmas Cactus that continues to bloom for me in the heat of June or July and then again in November. It was given to me as a gift from an onry elderly lady and it just brings such joy when it blooms out of season because she did everything on her own time and mind, so I believe each time it blooms Sharon is calling out to me and making me smile. I have several other plants that I take out every Spring and bring in to “save” for the winter. Each one has such meaning and purpose that I just would be devastated if they ever decided to wither away. Some of my plants are over 20 years old. AND I can honestly say I appreciate them fully. Today is also Quitter’s Day. It is held on the second Friday in January every year. Did you know that the tradition of setting New Year’s resolutions began some 4,000 years ago with the ancient Babylonians? They actually have done studies on Quitters Day. In 2019 an extensive research was conducted by Strava a social network for athletes. It was found that approximately 80% of people who made New Year’s resolutions have tapped out by the second Friday in January. This year I am NOT a statistic, because I just never started at the beginning of this year. I am still in the “Okay tomorrow morning is my day to start” mode. I am feeling pretty positive that at some point in 2025 I am going to start!!! One last celebration today is that it is Bittersweet Chocolate Day. I know it is used in a lot of different recipes BUT I can STILL remember the day my Mom had “a BAR OF CHOCOLATE” sitting out on the counter and not only did I steal a bite but 3 out of my 4 other siblings stole a bite too, mind you not at the same time.. My mom 50 years later still laughed about that day when each of us snuck into the kitchen and chompped off a bite and got the surprise of our tastebudding lives… Ugghhh.. Dry and disgusting AND you can’t just get it out of your mouth. It sticks around… Within an hour, me and my siblings were spitting and clammering for something to drink… I’ll never forget the day my Mom introduced me to Bittersweet Chocolate Day… As she put it, if you are going to be sneaky you must learn to deal with the consequences of your actions… The evil laugh and the no sympathy in her eyes bore into my soul!!!! AND yes, I did the same thing to my kids and I think I might have laughed just a little bit harder than she did…
