It’s National Fruitcake Day! Whether you are a fan or not, this is the day for those that do to rejoice in the delights of the boozy, chewy, rich amalgam of dried fruit, nuts, and sugar, saturated with one’s favorite alcohol, which is most commonly brandy or bourbon. These unbelievable ingredients produce a dense, sweet, and textured treat that is usually served around the holidays. The fruitcake is steeped in history as there have been fruitcakes found in ancient Egyptian tombs. I grew up around fruitcakes. My Dad was a huge fan. My grandma LOVED making them. They arrived every year between Thanksgiving and Christmas. As a child, I had no idea the burning taste in the “cake” was RUM! It is no wonder my grandma was always so happy when she was making the fruitcakes! I am not a fan but I will never deny anyone the love a good fruitcake, if there is such a thing. I do have a friend that her and her brother have been sending the SAME FRUITCAKE back and forth for the past 30 years! It is the gift that keeps giving and never seems to go bad… I do love the saying “nuttier than a fruitcake” it just sums up something just crazy enough to last FOR-EV-ER… It is cold outside and there is snow on the ground but never fear, today is National Make Cut-Out Snowflake Day. Take some time out today and create paper snowflakes, take yourself and your children back to a simpler time, when we created snowflakes and learned all about how there are no two snowflakes a like. If you want to get out, it was weird to find out that today is Visit the Zoo Day. I’d of thought that would be in the late Spring or Summer when the weather was warmer! BUT alas, it is today. The word “zoo” is in fact the shortest way to refer to a zoological park or garden. I love to visit the zoo and see all the unique animals and be able to watch them as they watch me! I grew up going to the Henry Doorley Zoo in Omaha NE and always love to visit other States Zoo. The Elephants, Giraffes, Monkeys, Penguins and Otters just are so much fun to spend hours watching!
